Yes, I know the risk of writing a song about Asbury Park, NJ. Some other guys have done a really good job of that. But I grew up on the Jersey Shore and it is my home turf. Asbury Park has played an essential, often confounding, role in my life.
The seed of this song came via text sent from my lifelong friend and musical confidant George Robson IV while stuck at a railroad crossing. The “sunset” in question is Sunset Avenue in Asbury Park. The text sounded like a chorus to me.
Blackwater finds its vibe in the dark hearts of the power hungry who put themselves above all others. Who is it about? That's up to you. From the national stage to our own neighborhoods, we all know the charlatans, the grifters, the shapeshifters who work every angle to benefit themselves over and above all others. "Don't ever look back" is the cry of the unrepentant.
The protagonist looks back on their rural youth and years of rebellion, where the difficult path was the most alluring. "Easy isn't better every time" is the mantra of a life filled with challenges, both unavoidable and self-inflicted.
